Big Zulu was on the come-up for many years before finally making a stamp in the South African music industry. He managed to be a judge on the SABC 1 show OneMic and released some hit singles. In a recent interview, he was asked if he’s ever killed a person before. The person who asked this question was prompted by Big Zulu calling himself Inkabi.
To the surprise of many, the Imali Eningi hitmaker admitted to murdering a person before. Big Zulu didn’t want to go into details, however. He brushed it off as something that happened in the past and something that belongs there.
Many of his listers and Mzansi at large know Big Zulu calls himself Inkabi. Inkabi is a Zulu word that means hired assassin or hitman. It’s not strange for hip-hop artists to call themselves vile words. Worldwide, rap artists name themselves killers and various other criminals, but it’s primarily metaphoric. Big Zulu meant that he was a true killer.
Inkabi Nation
Before the interview, many thought Inkabi Nation was a casual name. His fan base consists of adults, children, teenagers, mothers, uncles and grandparents and for years these people assumed he got the name from the taxi industry. Now that it’s revealed it came from a darker place, will his appeal dwindle?
Taxi driving and the taxi industry
Taxi drivers sometimes carry the stigma of being notorious and non-compliant. Before the Inhlupheko rapper admitted to being a killer, he initially came out as someone who started off driving taxis for a living. Many thought his name spewed from that environment.
Another factor that can’t be ignored is the violence in the taxi industry. Sometimes there are strikes, drivers fight over routes, and taxi owners take advantage. In some instances, murder is the final resolution to settle competition among owners.
Some people have witnessed horrific situations such as shootouts between taxi operators, innocent citizens being killed accidentally, and some drivers killing to defend themselves. The conviction rate in taxi wars is low, and perhaps that was how Big Zulu took a life in his olden days before becoming a star.
