Drama unfolded at tombstone maker Lebogang Khitsane’s funeral when his sister Rakgadi accused his wife of infidelity on live TV.
Khitsane, who once said he wanted to be remembered as “the Steve Jobs of tombstones” will be buried on Tuesday.
He was described as an innovative and creative businessman and his tombstones are renounced across Africa for their flamboyancy. He created some of the most memorable tombstones in South Africa most notably the ones for musician Mandoza, footballer John “Shoes” Moshoeu and Joe Mafela.
Khitsane died on Thursday from renal failure. His children described him as a loving and devoted father.
“Thank you for your unconditional, loud and unwavering love. Thank you for filling like the sun. You were warm, energetic and so comforting,” one of her daughters Tswelopele Khitsane said.
One of his friends Loyiso Mangena said, “He was a revolutionary, a visionary and great man. Most importantly he was a believer.”
“He took granite and made it to be a shining example,” another friend Thabo Mokwele said.
Bataung group, a firm taking car of his business empire described him as a brilliant, innovative, creative and an important contribute to the tombstone industry.
Among the guests was his childhood friend and Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina. “He defied all the odds and he revolutionarised the tombstone industry,” he said.
There was drama at the memorial service when one of Khitsane’s sisters accused his wife of infidelity.
“Lebogang was in pain. It turns out his wife had brought a man into the house,” her sister identified as Rakgadi said.
A bottle of water was thrown at Rakgadi but she was not hurt
Some relatives tried to stop her but Rakgadi insisted and kept shouting, “she brought a man into my brother’s house.”
Some people from the audience managed to remove her from the podium and order was restored. The incident left viewers in shock.
