Unemployed South Africans will receive R350 per month over a period of six months as unemployment benefits, the president of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa has said.
“A special Covid-19 distress grant of R350 for six months will be paid to individuals who are unemployed and who don’t receive any other grant,” Ramaphosa said in a statement.
The president also announced massive social and economic support package of R500 billion, 10% of of South Africa’s GDP.
“The urgent and dramatic measures we have taken to delay the spread of the virus have been absolutely necessary. They have given us the space to better respond to the inevitable rise in infections and to thereby save tens of thousands of lives,” Ramaphosa said.
