Ukhozi FM DJ Mgcino Shezi dies
South Africa’s entertainment has been robbed again after the untimely death of Ukhozi FM DJ Mgcino Shezi. His death comes barely a few hours after the death of Radio broadcasting legend Grant ‘Gentle Giant’ Shakoane.
The news over the untimely death of Ukhozi FM radio drama actor and radio DJ Mgcino Shezi has since flooded social media. Mgcino worked for several community radio stations including Imbokodo FM.
He was a DJ at the Umlazi-based community radio station, Intokozo FM when he met his death on Thursday, 22 April. Intokozo FM station manager Mxolisi Ntanzi said that Mgcino died after a short illness.
“He was ill for a short time. We didn’t expect that he was not going to recover because we believed that his illness was not serious. We are still shocked,” said Ntanzi.
Ntanzi also indicated that Mgcino was a hardworking and dedicated DJ who loved tradition as he was hosting a traditional music show on Sundays.
“He loved his job and he loved radio. He acted on different radio dramas that were aired on Ukhozi FM including radionovela Kusa Kusa and he was very talented. We have lost a great talent,” said Ntanzi.

He said the radio station will communicate with the family about the funeral arrangements. However, his death comes barely after Tim Modise confirmed the death of Radio broadcasting legend Grant ‘Gentle Giant’ Shakoane. Many South Africans are saddened by the news. However, rumour has it that the celebrated Radio personality lost his battle with Covid.
Grant Shakoane graced the mic early in the 80s on Metro FM. He introduced Soul and RnB to Sunday Radio and he was known for coming up with the original phrases like ‘Shibabadu’. The Gentle Giant also hosted a show on Vuma FM.
Mr Shakoane’s journey on Radio started as a translator at an advertising agency working at the SABC. He later decided to audition for a job on-air at the broadcaster and this was the beginning of his marvellous journey in the industry.
