In a bid to reach out to an African audience, ESPN Africa has partnered with Tyson Ngubeni.
In order to engage locals on American Sports, ESPN Africa is working woth Tyson Ngubeni’s alter-ego Bob O’Connor as a Special Correspondent. The comedian is set to cover the NFL Super Bowl live on the 8th of February. What a genius way to tap into Africa’s viewers and sports lovers.
Tyson Ngubeni bags ESPN deal
Tyson’s comedy has fast made him a fan favourite. His lockdown Chicken Licken advert proved to be one of the most genius adverts of 2020. He had our attention and he kept it!
The comedian has been striving for a while to get into television to not avail. Tyson studied drama and journalism at the University of Rhodes.
The comedian was turned down by agencies multiple times and just never seemed to make the cut. All it took was one of his videos to go viral before South Africa turned heads and he became the best thing since sliced bread. His church group asked him to do a stand up comedy set but he opted for a skit that basically blew up and made him a Mzansi favourite.
“I was like okay. I made like a six minutes thing, a news parody. There was an anchor character and there were field reporters. I was playing multiple characters and one of them was that field reporter, reporting on a stop-nonsense,” he says.
The talent with accents you might ask. Tyson says he was always good at accents and when he got to work at a call center he had to perfect his accents. For example, when attending to someone in Netherlands, he had to speak to them in a Dutch accent such that they wouldn’t know they are talking to a South African.
It will be exciting to experiemce American sport through Tyson.
