Background
Tumi was born on the 22nd of December in 1981. She was born and raised in the Free state. However in the early 2000s she relocated to the Gauteng province. However most of her family is still in the Free State. She had an interview with she told Showmax “What I like about Bloem is that’s where my family is and that’s where my language makes sense to people, because when I speak a lot of people are like: ‘Where do we place you? Are you Tswana; are you a Sotho-speaking girl?’ But when I say “Bloemfontein”, they say it makes says, it’s the Afrikaans. It all falls into place.”
Her parents were both anti-apartheid activists. Her mother was once arrested for treason while her father was in hiding. This forced him to come looking for her and he too was arrested. She says that her parents, especially her mother were never the same after the time they spent in jail.
Educational Background
She completed her tertiary education at DUT. After this she then went on to study at the great Wits University. She studied Drama which paid out later on with her acting career. However finishing her degree was a feat. She had to drop out due to financial issues. Tumi only got to finish her degree 6 years later. One can see that she is a natural performer from the way she holds an audience even during her comedic performances. Her Degree in Drama was an added advantage, allowing her to refine her talents.

Career
Tumi’s career began as the host of The Big Brother Hot Room, a comical summary of Big Brother Africa. She also was on the judging panel of She’s The One. Her big break came as the presenter of Our Perfect Wedding. She was on the show for 3 seasons which was unprecedented. This was due to fans actually demanding her return to the show.
She has also been in a lot of TV shows. Tumi played the hilarious Persistence on the comedy Askies. However her roles are not limited to sitcoms even if she is the First Lady of Comedy. She has appeared in a lot of drama series including the queen alongside Kenneth Nkosi and Dineo Langa.
On top of all her work, Tumi also plays ambassador to a lot companies. She is the face of many campaigns with Vodacom and Kelloggs. Tumi has also hosted the South African Film and Television Awards and the SAMA awards. She is a regular voice on the sound waves of Jacaranda FM and Motsweding FM. Tumi hosts quite a number of shows on the stations.In 2018, she became the first African woman to have her own set on Netflix. She is also known to be the first woman to host Comedy Central Presents in Africa.

Book
Her book is titled “And Then Mama Said” as a dedication to her mother. The book is more of a collection of her life’s memories. Included in the book are her recollections on the Race row on Jacaranda FM, her close brush with death in the form of an accident and her son’s near death experience as well.
The book is very candid even detailing her near divorce and her experience with losing her mother. It’s not just a tell all but an inspirational book about her inspirational life. Tumi was on the receiving end of the terrible treatment by police. She says that she was 7months pregnant when the ordeal happened. It took place in Cape Town and it is really unclear how Tumi looked threatening at the time. However she ended up with seven rifles pointing at her threatening to take her life.
