The President of the United States announced that he will sign temporary orders to suspend immigration into the United States due to coronavirus pandemic.
Trump made his intentions known through his Twitter handle:
“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!”
Trump makes reference to the ‘invisible enemy’ coronavirus as the reason for his order to suspend immigration. Other American politicians believe the United States president is hiding behind immigration amid his failure to prepare for the pandemic.
The New York Times reports that the Trump administration is planning to no longer approve any applications from foreigners to live and work in the US for an undetermined period of time, effectively shutting down the legal immigration system.
The United States immigration ban is likely to cause diplomatic problems between the United States and the rest of the world.
