TRAGEDY: Gomora actor Don Israel Matseke Zulu loses his right leg to aggressive disease
Israel Matseke Zulu, who played the role of Don Buthelezi on Gomora, has lost his right leg after being diagnosed with gangrene. Gomora fans recently witnessed their favourite actor exiting the show via death; Don was shot by his lover Zodwa (Sannah Mchunu).
Despite various reports behind Israel’s Gomora exit, the actor and his manager opened up and revealed that Don asked the show producers to be released. He was diagnosed with an aggressive disease that eats up and dry skin called gangrene, making it difficult for him to move while shooting scenes.
He said he struggled to get around on set and was using a wheelchair during his last scenes.
Don from Gomora leg gets amputated
Israel Matseke Zulu confirmed to Savannanews that he was recovering after an operation on his right leg and is receiving enough support from family and co-workers from Gomora during the recovery period.
The Alex born and bred award-winning actor revealed that he still has a significant role in the South African film industry, either on-screen or behind the scenes.
“I will take this brief setback to reflect on life; I still have a lot to contribute in the film industry.”
Having worked with Gomora producers since the inception of the award-winning soapie as a scene shooting scout, Sereti Films considers returning his Don character after recovery.
Don character on leaving Gomora
Gomora fans and cast members instantly felt Israel Matseke Zulu’s departure when he exited the show. Sannah Mchunu, who plays the role of Zodwa, Don’s baby mama and Sicelo Buthelezi, who played Teddy, Don’s child, penned down heartfelt farewell to their on-screen father. Zodwa revealed that Don’s presence remains felt across the Gomora set, especially with his children Teddy and Sibongile.
Despite initially calling for his exit, some fans instantly realized that Israel Masteke Zulu’s void on Gomora will never be replaced.
Will Israel Matseke Zulu return on Gomora?
A close source revealed that Gomora show producers consider returning the Don character after outrage from fans. Don’s dead body is still yet to be found on-screen after his daughter Sibongile and right-hand man Stompie connived to bury him in secrecy. Failure to show Don’s lifeless body allows scriptwriters to bring the character back to life.
