Thoko Didiza was a Minister of Public Works under the former South Africa President Thabo Mbeki’s administration. After President Thabo Mbeki’s resignation in September 2008, Didiza offered to resign with other 10 cabinet ministers. A move she later reversed and decided to stay.
She suffered her political low on 20 June 2016 when she was announced as the City of Tshwane’s mayoral candidate in municipal elections. Her candidature announcement triggered violent protests in the City of Tshwane protesting against her nomination. Despite violent protests which claimed 5 deaths, Didiza refused to step down. Reports suggest that the then President Jacob Zuma rejected her resignation.
