How ‘Mr Rich’ blew R1 million from his RAF payout after an accident
Abel Ngobeni became known as Mr Rich in the community after he received an insurance payout of R1,185,000 from the Road Accident Fund.
He narrated his story:
On the day of the accident, I was on my way to Rosslyn from Soshanguve. I got hit by a car on Monday the 7th of November. My ankle was damaged and flesh peeled off as my bones were broken. They put metal pins on my ankle and paid out R1,185,000 from the insurance fund.
Before a lawyer transferred the money into my bank account, I asked her to give me R20,000 to buy clothes so l could get a feel of the money. I had R10,000 in my left pocket and R10,000 on my right. I put my hands in my pockets so people did not realise I was loaded. I went into a store and bought sports clothes for R6,000.
His wife was also blessed with new things:
He went to town and bought me a smartphone and sneakers for R1,000 and sports shorts for R900, she said.
Ngobeni went on to buy a car:
I went to a car dealership and asked a white guy how much a car cost. He said R55,000 and I told him to give it to me and he refused. They drove the car and parked at my home. I drove around in that car and at some point, it broke down on the road. I had the car for less than three weeks and I bought another 1,6-litre engine for R65,000. I used both cars.
Abel’s wife told him that he bought a plot and built a house after I advised him to do so.
If it wasn’t me he would have returned back to Giyani, she said

Ngobeni went on to build the house in three weeks:
I bought everything for R290,000. It took the builders just three weeks to finish the house. I went to a furniture store and bought a sound system for R11,000, three plasma TVs, a double bed for R5,000, a stove for R5,000, curtains for R3,000 in each room. I went to another furniture shop and bought sofas for R17,000 and two fridges.
One of her neighbours revealed that they used to call him Mr Rich, Mandoza or Nkalakhatha. A lot of people would come here and party. We wouldn’t sleep. It was clear that it was Mr Money’s house. It was Bhuti Mandoza’s house. I blew that money and I enjoyed it. I would get drunk and shout, we are blowing RAF money! I bought a bakkie or R69,000 and it crashed. My money was finished and I sold everything, the fridges, the bed, the stove, sofas, Hi-Fi Sound system, everything.
His wife left him as he had changed his behaviour. He rented out the house to other people.
