She started off in the band called Jack-Knife. They made hits like Fester and Chommie. These were club hits. They gained the members Kimon Webster, Themba Smuts and Thandiswa low key underground recognition. Thandiswa later on left Jack-Knife.
She went on the Road to Fame talent show where she was noticed by producer Don Laka. This was also the time when she joined Bongo Maffin. This band became the love child of phenomenal kwaito and authenticity meet a cool, jazzy feel. Her voice was the staple of the rebellion! She was the voice of the subconscious in the youths’ head with her thought-provoking lyrics. At the same time, she commanded their movements with dance floor favorites like Thath’isgubhu. Due to their unrivaled talent, Bongo Maffin won numerous awards. They also got to play with musical legends like Stevie Wonder and the great Marley Clan.
In 2004 she released her first solo album titled Zabalaza. It reached Double platinum and won quite a number of awards. From a Kora award for Best African female to South African words, Zabalaza took the world by storm. 5 years later she released her almost instantly gold album, Ibokwe. She was dubbed South Africa’s finest female contemporary singer by The Guardian.
Thandiswa has performed all over the world at venues, including at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony, The Apollo in New York, WOMEX and the Cannes Film Festival. She collaborated on two songs with US musician Meshell Ndegeocello on her album The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2007.
