Teenage girl begs magistrate not to jail the man who raped her
In a case that left the court puzzled, a teenage girl begged the magistrate not to jail her boyfriend who was convicted of statutory rape.
The 14 year old from Lutumba village in Beitbridge burst into tears and pleaded with the magistrate to free her 20 year old boyfriend Lovemore Mapanzure when he was about to be sentenced.
The girl was rescued from the her captor four days after she had gone missing. Mapanzure used his uncle’s place to stay with the girl after influencing her to leave home.
Beitbridge resident magistrate, Tiyondepi Zhou, convicted Mapanzure, who pleaded guilty, and sentenced him to one year imprisonment before suspending four months of the sentence on condition that he doesn’t commit the same offence in five years.

State prosecutor Tariro Makaya, narrated that the accused proposed love to the girl sometime in December last year and she consented to be in a love relationship with him.
On 29 March this year, the teenager made her way to Mapanzure’s uncle’s homestead to visit her boyfriend and the pair became intimate once.

The two stayed together for a period of four days and they were intimate at least once daily. Upon realising that her daughter wasn’t returning home, the teenager’s mother reported a missing person to the police and after being asked a few questions, the police established the girl could have decided to stay permanently with her boyfriend.

The police raided Mapanzure’s uncle’s homestead and found him and the girl leading to his arrest.
Mapanzure has had his day in court and will serve an effective 8 months in prison, according to the Herald
