Teen bully from Mathole High School sentenced to one year of community service
A teen bully from Mathole High School in Mahlabathini in Zululand district has been sentenced to a year’s community service. Prosecuting Authority KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Natasha Kara confirms the sentence.
The 16 year old girl convicted of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been given a one year sentence of community service by the Mahlabathini magistrates’ court. The bullying incident was captured on video. The video widely circulated on social media and members of the public were displeased with the bully’s actions.
This comes after a girl called Lufuno committed suicide after she was bullied by a fellow student. The #JusticeForLufono is trending and members of the public are still need to see bullies facing the consequences of their actions.

We have seen some popular people like Somizi campaigning against bullying and encouraging young people to communicate whenever they encounter such cases. Another girl from Nthuba High School was trending of a girl being assaulted by another female student. Many think it is time Laws are reviewed so that children are protected and the consequences of bullying need to be harsh ant the act itself should not be tolerated.
Cases of bullying have been increasing in South Africa and it disturbing that girls are dominating. This leaves the authorities wondering if something is wrong with our societies and what the real cause is.
In videos that have circulated on social media, spectators cheer whilst the victim suffers. No one helps them and it is also worrying that the society rejoices when one is suffering. This is something that should be addressed and awareness campaigns are essential.
Lufuno’s bully was arrested last week and further details to the arrests are to be confirmed.
