Mamelodi Sundowns’ ambitions to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season have taken a knock, with their opening bid for winger Antonio Van Wyk turned down by Austrian side SV Reid.
The Brazilians, chasing Orlando Pirates in the league and eyeing a massive CAF Champions League campaign in 2026, are desperate to add firepower to Miguel Cardoso’s squad. After a sluggish start to the season, reinforcements at Chloorkop have become a necessity — and Van Wyk, a former Stellenbosch star, has emerged as a prime target.
Bid Rejected
According to iDiski Times, Sundowns tabled a cash‑only offer for the 23‑year‑old speedster, but Reid wasted no time in rejecting it. The Austrian outfit countered with a player‑plus‑cash proposal, suggesting Siyabonga Mabena be included in the deal.
That, however, is a non‑starter for Sundowns. Mabena has been earmarked as one of the club’s brightest prospects and remains firmly in Cardoso’s long‑term plans.
Van Wyk’s Journey
Van Wyk joined SV Reid at the start of last season after three productive years at Stellenbosch, where he notched up 78 appearances, six goals, and 11 assists. In Austria, he has continued to grow, featuring in 36 matches and contributing two goals and seven assists. Encouragingly, five of those assists and one goal have come this season, underlining his steady progress.
What Next for Sundowns?
With their first attempt rebuffed, the ball is now back in Sundowns’ court. The club must decide whether to return with an improved cash offer or risk losing out on a player who could add pace and creativity to their attack.
For Cardoso, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Domestic rivals are breathing down their necks, and continental glory remains the ultimate prize. Whether Van Wyk becomes part of that journey will depend on Sundowns’ next move in the transfer market.
