Mamelodi Sundowns has made a major signing just before the deadline of the PSL transfer window by securing Thembinkosi Lorch from Orlando Pirates. The move, completed on Friday, 26 January, sent shockwaves through the South African football landscape, leaving fans of both clubs grappling with the unexpected reality of seeing Lorch donning the Brazilians’ yellow and green.
Sundowns confirmed on Saturday that the former Buccaneer talisman, Lorch, has joined the club. The highly-rated attacker has long been on the wanted list of the Tshwane giants. “Welcome. Former South African Player of the Season Thembinkosi Lorch joins Masandawana! Let’s welcome our newest addition,” said Sundowns in a short statement.
However, the specific terms of Lorch’s deal at his new club remain undisclosed, as Sundowns did not reveal the length of the player’s contract. Lorch’s move to Sundowns comes after his former club, Pirates, issued a brief statement wishing him well in his future endeavours. “The club thanks ‘Nyoso’ for his immense contribution by adding another page in the history of the club. We wish him and his family well in his future sporting pursuit”.
Lorch’s departure comes after eight years at Pirates. In 176 appearances, the 30-year-old contributed 34 goals and 30 assists while also hoisting four trophies – three MTN8 titles and one Nedbank Cup. The 2019 PSL Footballer of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season, Lorch has been a mainstay for Pirates and a fan favourite for years with his breathtaking performances. However, in recent times, Lorch, who has also earned eight Bafana Bafana caps, has made little contribution to Pirates due to injuries and off-the-field issues.
Lorch is the fourth player to pen a deal with Sundowns in the January transfer window. It will be interesting to see how he performs with his new team and how his departure affects Pirates’ performance in the future.
