She was at the centre of controversy for defying the national lockdown directive, which was placed to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic. Despite the order by the government to restrict movement and stay home, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams visited ANC NEC member Mduduzi Manana. Mduduzi Manana posted a photo of them having lunch on social media leading to public outcry for ignoring lockdown regulations.
President Cyril Ramaphosa summoned her to explain why she ignored the lockdown directive; she apologized to the nation in a video. Despite her apology being accepted, she was temporarily placed on two months of unpaid leave. In the process, she picked up a criminal record after paying an R1000 admission of the guilty fee. This was after she was charged with contravention of regulation 11 B of the Disaster Management Act.
