Wonders never cease to amaze. Robert Marawa reveals the person who got him fired thrice and left him jobless. With an illustrious career spanning years, Robert Marawa has since been dupped as one of the celebrated sports media personalities in South Africa. His profile saw him sharing the sports analysis panel with some of the world’s finest. However, in the mix of things, he was axed from SABC and SuperSport. His exit took a knock on his career.
His exit was a shocker to South Africans and the footballing fraternity since he became a darling in sports analysis. The reasons behind his exit have since been a mystery. In the mix of things months after his controversial exit Robert has named and shamed influential people behind his fall from SABC and SuperSport.
He has it that there might have been a “cabal” that was responsible for him getting ‘fired’ from his popular sports shows at the SABC and SuperSport. The sports broadcaster revealed this in his new book, Gqimm Shelele: The Robert Marawa Story. Marawa was candid on his exit and made it known that third parties fueled and gave final nails in his sackings both on SABC and SuperSport.

Reports have it that Robert Marawa was first axed from SABC’s Metro FM in July 2017. In the mix of things, a few years later, down the line, he was dismissed from another show on SuperSport in 2019. This signalled his downfall. Again his popular show Marawa Sports Worldwide, broadcast simultaneously on Metro FM and Radio 2000 in 2021, was discarded.
In the wake of his fallout with broadcasters, he has it that he was fired. However, in the mix of things, both SuperSports and SABC released statements that rubbished claims. They have it that he was never fired, but his contracts were not renewed.
“When I speak of external forces applying pressure on management at the SABC and SuperSport, who then am I referring to? I have said publicly that I believe that one person is responsible for having me fired multiple times.”
“I can never have proof. But, certainly, I have my suspicions. The first time I was fired from Metro by Sully [former SABC group sports executive Sully Motsweni] in 2017, I said to my producer that I thought the chairman, PSL chairman Irvin Khoza, was behind my firing.”
In the mix of things, Khoza has since distanced himself from having a hand in the Marawa fallout. Well, in his book Marawa again took a jab seemingly at Khoza. A statement from the book reads:
“I believed that there was a cabal within the SABC, and its main aim was never about restoration or resurrection of the broadcaster. Their mission was to rubber-stamp their own authority and gain control and get rid of certain individuals. For some reason, I was always at the forefront of that and a prime target for this cabal.”
