Cuban doctors on South Africa lockdown: Cuban doctors have voiced their concern over the current wave of infections that are increasing rapidly mostly in Western Cape. They have warned South Africa to remain under a strict lockdown or face a catastrophe and a collapse of the health delivery system.
Speaking to EWN Journalist Clement Manyathela, the doctors has expressed their distress in the manner the controls are being implemented in South Africa. “I just interviewed one of the Cuban doctors. He says given the surge in covid-19 cases, SA needs to remain under strict lock down. He is warning that if the country eases restrictions, we will see a second wave of infections, which he says will be more dangerous and harmful,” Manyathela said.

However, some citizens were not impressed by the opinion of the Cuban doctors on South Africa lockdown. The doctors arrived in South Africa last month to assist the government to contain the coronavirus pandemic. They feel the doctors are not supposed to comment about the local rules and regulations as their roles are in the hospital premises
Some Twitter user commended, “Heard the interview. Unconvincing. While we value foreign medical expertise (I think..), these Cuban doctors also need to stay in their lanes. They dont understand SA’s unique challenges and shouldn’t be commenting on another country’s lockdowns. He is also NOT an actuarial scientist.”
Another user questioned, can journalists ask: “1. Of the 264 who died how many had pre-existing conditions(comorbidities) i.e.TB, Diabetes, Heart disease; 2. How many were 65 years old and above? 3. Why are we seeing fewer deaths recorded during this covid-19 period than same period in past 5 years?”
South Africa yesterday experienced the largest number of infections in the country with new 1,160 infections. Around 75% of the new infections are from the Western Cape province. Total number of infections are 15,515. Recoveries are almost half of the total infections at 7,006. The country received 216 doctors from Cuba hoping to lift a burden on the overwhelmed health sector. Cuba embarked on medical internationalism from 1959.
