THE South African education is embroiled in confusion as the minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga further postpones the reopening of schools to June 8. In response to the postponement, the country’s Educators Union have dragged Motshekga to court seeking an interdict to the reopening of schools.
They said they will make sure that the court’s rule on the way forward.
The continued confusion on whether schools should open or not is said to be demoralising children as the minister keeps on changing decisions on when the schools are set to open.
Motshekga yesterday cancelled the reopening of schools, three hours before children where getting ready to go to schools.
The minister’s spokesperson, Elijah Mahlanga, turned down questions from parents asking whether their children should prepare for school or not.
This has made Unions and various schools to go against Motshekga refusing to reopen schools even though she declared last month that schools would reopen yesterday.
It was left to the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) to issue a statement last night to clarify that pupils would only return to school on 8 June following rejections by education unions for schools to resume today after Motshekga’s announcement last month.
But the Educators Union of South Africa (EUSA) said they make sure that the court’s judgement will map the way forward on whether schools should reopen or not.
However, Unions and several schools in South Africa have gone against Motshekga, denying to reopen schools.
Most schools in the country have not received the relevant personal protective equipment for teachers and pupils.
