Soldiers assault a police officer for disrupting a party
Two soldiers beat Steven Chananda a ZRP Police Officer for enforcing lock down regulations. The soldiers severely injured the police officer.
The soldiers were braaing and drinking when Officer Chananda and other four police officers were on patrol enforcing the Covid- 19 lock down regulations.
The police officer then notices a group of people drinking, braaing and playing high volume music at Medium Density Shopping Centre in Chipinge.
After noticing the patrol team the soldiers allegedly struck Chananda several times with a stone while the other hit him with a plastic chair. The soldiers went on to order the police force to remove handcuffs on a local DJ.
Prosecutor Bikita on Monday confirms the issue saying,
“Mike Nyabote (soldier) struck the police officer six times on the shoulder and abdomen with stones while his accomplice Milicent Ndebvu (soldier) uses a plastic chair to hit the officer.”
Officer Chananda will produce a medical report that proves the injuries from the assault. The two suspects Ndebvu and Nyabote are facing two counts of assaulting a Police Officer and obstructing law enforcement agents performing their duties during national lock down as defined in secfion11 of statutory instrument 83/20.
Zimbabwe continues to record increases in new infections of Covid-19. The deaths are also increasing but it seems some portion of the public is still oblivious of the importance of the lock down. A record high of 36 deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours. This calls for serious measures and the public to keep exercising extra caution.
