Another day of uncertainty for SABC soapie lovers. SABC has announced that production of Skeem Sam will be going on a production break on the 1st of March.
According to SABC 1, the requirements of the contract have been fulfilled with the SABC fulfilling it’s obligations to the production company and the production company having fulfilled all it’s obligations to the SABC. The soapie has delivered on all the episodes required by the agreement.
While there are rumours of the show being canceled, the SABC hasn’t confirmed nor denied the rumours. Actors will be paid up to the 1st of March. The SABC has no obligation to pay the actors during the production break.
Skeem Sam to go on a production break
However, it’s not the end of the world as Skeem Sam will continue as usual as negotiations for another season progress.
Other than Skeem Sam’s production break, 2021 has come with a lot of on screen changes for soapie lovers. The most striking being the cancelation of Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya. The soapie’s last episode will air later in the year, paving way for Diepsloot which will star Thandeka Dawn King. Muvhango has also seen an episode cut with the show being cut to 3 episodes per week, making way for the Xitsonga telenovela, Giyani. 7 de Laan is also in the same bracket, having been reduced to 3 episodes per week. The remaining slots will be occupied by Die Sentrum. A petition was drafted to avoid the reduction of episodes for 7 de Laan but was met by a firm SABC resounding no.
“This change forms the SABC 2’s channel strategy to increase and diversify it’s drama offering and provide audiences with entertaining, fres, diverse and relevant local content. This will enable sabc 2 to showcase different storirs which represent the diversity of our nation,” the SABC said in a statement.
On the brighter side of things, The Estate will premier on SABC 3 replacing Isidingo.
