South African business man Sam ‘Mshengu’ Chabalala was arrested after falling into a trap set up by Hawks. Mshengu was out on bail after he was arrested last year for a similar offence, and also for forgery.
“He attempted to bribe one of our officers with R120 000, so that he can get his Mercedes Benz G-Wagon back, and also so that his case an disappear. He thinks because he has money he can get away with everything,” said Hawks’ Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.
Mshengu made headlines last year when he, together with his friends put together 72 cars and drove the convoy to Durban July festival.
Sam is a repeat offender as he committed a crime whilst he is out on bail. Apart from being charged for forging his citizenship, Sam was also charged for bribery before being released on bail. Sam is believed to be a Zimbabwean who forged his citizenship to become a South African.
Mshengu runs a company called Sam Holdings. The company owns haulage trucks that ferry coal from coal mining companies to power stations.
