Earlier this week a Rustenburg teen escaped death by a whisker when she jumped out of her kidnappers’ car while it was moving. The young girl narrowly escaped kidnappers in a suspected human trafficking attempt.
News of the foiling attempt has since gone viral on social media and Mzansi has weighed in with #AmINext and #EndHumanTraffickingInSA campaign.
According to sources close to this publication, the incident took place at Fields College where the culprits nabbed the girl whom they caught off guard. When the incident happened the girl was still wearing her school uniform, and they shoved her into their car and sped off. However, the brave teen reportedly decided to jump out of the moving car in an attempt to escape them. Luckily, her efforts paid off and she got away. However, the girl was left traumatized by the incident.
The incident comes in the wake of a number of reported human trafficking cases across South Africa. Many took to social media to voice their concern and worry over the issue.
South African award-winning Hip Hop star Casper Nyovest shared a number of tweets blasting the government for not doing enough in addressing the issue of human trafficking.
South Africans and the world at large flooded social media with posts under #AmINext and #EndHumanTraffickingInSA. Cassper Nyovest wasn’t the only celeb to speak out about it. Blue Mbombo called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to take punitive action.
However some South African had mixed feelings over the issue pointing out the campaign was for desktop activism rather there is much need to take it to the streets. Byanong MeiChomie who goes by the Twitter handle @NjaYaTeng weighed in with
#EndHumanTraffickingInSA When are we all going to the streets though!… I feel we are more of a desktop activist
However, the Government is yet to issue a statement over the issue.
