The musician has been through the test of time, and she overcame it all. Rebecca Malope was born in 1968 in Lekazi near Nelspruit in Mpumalanga Province. She had a tough childhood as she was raised in a poverty-stricken home. At an early age, she was confirmed to a wheelchair after an illness, doctors believed she would never walk again throughout her life. Her family was poor, and they couldn’t seek a second option. However, God’s favour shone upon her life, and she eventually healed and regained her mobility.
Having been raised in a less privileged family, Rebecca Malope learned the skills of being a breadwinner at a very young age. At 18, she would accompany her sister Cynthia Malope to search for jobs in the Johannesburg township of Evaton. The two would travel for many kilometres by foot from Mpumalanga to Evaton to look for odd jobs to earn a few coins.
Dr Rebecca Malope’s rise to fame
In 1985 she entered a television contest Shell Road To Fame, a television contest with the band she was with; unfortunately, they were eliminated in the first round of the competition. The following year, under Sizwe Zako, Rebecca Malope won the Shell Road To Fame competition as a solo artist in the category of Female Vocalist.
She used this opportunity to mark the beginning of her musical career, and she signed a record deal with Sizwe Zakoas, her producer and Peter Tiadi as her manager. Together they worked on her breakthrough pop album Sthembike Kuwe. Since her breakthrough in the entertainment industry, she has been producing top hits. Malope also received an honorary doctorate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of California for her positive impact on the music industry.
