Nokuthula Mavuso is a South African actress who plays Amo on MNet’s Lioness. The actress is no newbie to our screens but instead has been around for more than a decade. Nokuthula is one diverse actress who has shown her versatility in the different roles that she portrays.
The actress is a mother of two. One being a 7 year old and the other was born in 2019. Other than sharing special moments, Nokuthula Mavuso is keen on keeping her private life private.
While she works towards creating a happy home for her children, Nokuthula had a tough upbringing. Her father abandoned her and in similar fashion, her mother left her with an aunt. It was when she was grown up that she looked for her paternal side of the family and chose to use her father’s surname.
Her role as Amo in Lioness is another notch to her colourful belt. The most career defining roles for her were her role as Tshidi Khuse on Rhythm City, Angela on The River and the low key Lu of Backstage. However, being the diverse actress that she is, she has also had roles in Abomama bomthandazo, Umlilo among other Mzansi favourites.
While her CV may be colourful, the journey upwards was an uphill task. Nokuthula has spoken about being abused in the industry.
“I was 19, starting out as an actor when a ‘respected’ male actor in his 30s said he wanted to ‘take care’ of me while stroking my hair. This particular actor was married even. I just played along for an hour or so and ducked as soon as I could,
I had reported him on many occasions and nobody listened. I got fed up. I asked to be written out of the show. They thought I was kidding. I simply refused to work. They got other actors to talk me out of my madness. Stood my ground. I was ready to march to the broadcaster…You refuse their advances, you’re a s**t, a prima-donna, difficult,” she said.
