Government has outlined clear application process for the COVID-19 R350 social relief grant. The Ministry of Social development also confirmed that the social relief grant will be paid on 15 May 2020. The social development portfolio says that the R350 social relief grant is ready to be rolled. Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu revealed that beneficiaries who do not have access to technology will be assisted by volunteers.
The grant was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa as part of government’s efforts to cushion the poor and unemployed from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The South African Social Security Agency or SASS Chief Executive Officer Busisiwe Memela reveals that only qualifying beneficiaries will receive the grant.
She clearly pointed out that those who are currently receiving any form of grant will be disqualified. According to the pilot survey they conducted. Out of 90 000 applications, 11 000 applicants were already receiving grants hence do not qualify to receive the R350 social relief grant. This includes the mothers of children will not qualified.

The application process for a special COVID-19 Social Relief Distress grant will kick off on Monday.
The COVID-19 R350 social grant will be applied using WhatsApp, Email, Phone, SMS and Website. All application options are expected to go live on Monday and will be clearly demonstrated by Minister Zulu at the launch.
Applications for the social relief grant will be done electronically, this helps to speed up the process as there are many verifications to be done. For an application to be successful, details will be cross checked with the department of home affairs, banking details cross checked and feedback given. To maintain health regulations of social distancing and lockdown rules, no physical forms will be completed at SASSA offices.

- The R350 will be accessed using the following criteria
- The unemployed, 18 years and above people who are not receiving social grants, UIF, and NSFAS stipend.
- Applicants will be required to have a valid ID number, Name and Surname as stated on ID, Valid Banking details, Contact details, Proof of residential address.
Minister warns the public against scammers
Minister Lindiwe Zulu applauded citizens for showing great patience as the government was preparing systems for the grant payment. She says SASSA have ensured that all necessary protocols and laws are put into place before the launch of grant distribution. She cautioned the public to be vigilant against scammers.
“Applicants are cautioned not to provide their banking details to anyone to avoid scams.
SASSA will only request information once the application has been approved.
All beneficiaries and applicants of the COVID-19 R350 social relief grant should never give their PIN number or the CVV number on the back of the banking card to anyone, not even SASSA.
Once applications are approved, SASSA will request confirmation of bank accounts though a secure site.
This will also be done electronically. Applicants have the right to request confirmation that a request is from SASSA in order to protect themselves. Payment will be effected through deposits made directly into an approved applicant’s bank account if they have one.
Applicants without bank accounts can also apply and their payment will be effected through a money transfer.”
