The Zimbabwe Republic Police have begun to conduct patrols to disperse any unlawful gatherings in the wake of the decree by the President to limit gatherings to people less than 100.
The President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa announced declared a State of National Disaster in Zimbabwe following the outbreak of corona virus in most parts off the world. Gatherings of people more than 100 was prohibited. The police is seeking to restrict the public from gathering.
The police informed the public through a post:
In view of the corona virus pandemic and the measures put in place by the Government of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Republic Police will ensure that all Government directives and regulations meant to step up the safety and security of citizens are prioritised. The ZRP is working closely with relevant arms of Government and appeals for cooperation from members of the public. The Government’s ban of 100 or more people, be it at church, music, soccer and any other gatherings should therefore be observed. Police are conducting patrols, surveillance and checks to ensure compliance.
The news is likely to be met with mixed feelings as the ZRP’s reputation is not in good standing with the public. The police has been involved in killing of civilians in Zimbabwe. A notable case is when the police killed civilians during the January 2019 protests. They are also on record denying a civilian to get private medical care whilst in remand. The man later died at Harare Central prison.
