Pictures and Videos: MKMVA, Durban residents and truck drivers march to ‘remove foreigners’
Members of the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA), truck drivers and other residents took to the streets to target foreign-owned shops and stalls, demanding their immediate closure in Durban today.
National Truck Drivers Federations (NTDF) and the All Truck Drivers Foundation (ATDF) members started the demonstration early in the morning by blockading the Langeberg Road with burning tyres, before marching to the CBD and joining members from the MK Vets who were already gathered in town.

Bishop Sandile Ndlela of the MKMVA said they were marching against a system that was allowing foreigners to take control of the CBD, eroding jobs available for South Africans.
“The aim of the people here is not to fight with the foreigners, we are fighting with the system. South Africans are not employed. Second, the foreigners are transporting drugs and they are also involved in human trafficking, taking our women to be sex workers,” he said.

One member of the MKMVA Mbongeni Maphumulo was shot by the police by a rubber bullet from close range as they were marching a towards barricaded a no go area. He was recording arguing with the police during the protest.

It is not the first time that the military vets have been involved in spearheading a campaign against foreigners in Durban. Earlier this month, the vets disrupted business run by foreigners in the Berea area, a ridge above the city of Durban.
