26-year-old Ntiyiso Xilumane has been sentenced to life imprisonment at the Polokwane High Court for the murder of medical intern Shongile Nkwashu.
During the prosecution, Xilumane said that he loved the deceased Dr. Shongile Nkwashu and planned to marry her and has asked for forgiveness from the victim’s family. Ntiyiso said his sentencing should be 15 years, with 3 years removed.
He admitted guilt for the murder of 24-year-old Dr. Shongile Nkwashu in January this year at Mankweng Hospital and the High court slapped him with life in prison.
Speaking to Savannanews, one of the High Court judges says this (Ntiyiso Xilumane) case ruling is the only way to make sure justice is served.
“When life is taken away, justice has to be served murderers and GBV perpetrators have no place in our societies, this everyday killing and abuse of women must come to an end and the justice system and law enforcement officers have to do more to protect innocent citizens of this nation. Let others be warned”.
Nkwashu family representative says the family “welcomes” the judgement, however, the loss of their daughter still haunts them.
“Justice has been served and as a family, we welcome the High Court judgement however no judgment will replace our beloved Shongile. She had high hopes for the future, her love for the community pushed her to study medicine and give back to the community, its been several months after she tragically departed but it feels like yesterday.”
