No more foreign medical treatment for ministers and myself – Chiwenga
Vice President and Health and Child Care Minister Retired General Constantino Chiwenga has ordered a stop in the referral of government ministers to foreign hospitals for medical treatment in a bid to forge the development of the local health care delivery system.
Chiwenga was speaking during yesterday‘s cabinet briefing when he called for a stop in thee ‘export’ of patients. He was frank to call himself out as one of the culprits that gobbles a lot of foreign currency seeking medical attention abroad.
We will not export our patients. We will not make referrals for our patients. Those who have been going out are you and me, all together. That export bill was too high, that’s what we want to curtail, Chiwenga said.
Chiwenga says he will oversee the restructuring of the health care delivery system from the village up to provincial and referral hospitals. He went on to indicate the government will develop specialist hospitals across the country to avoid foreign travel for medical care.
We are restructuring from the village to referral hospitals. We will hospitals that will specialise in certain treatments. We want to say if you want your liver removed go to St Lukes in Lupane, if you want your kidney treated go to Masvingo General Hospital. Do i make myself clear? He continued.

Chiwenga spent the better part of 2019 receiving treatment in South Africa and China for suspected poisoning. He returned and thanked is ‘brother‘ President ED Mnangagwa for assisting him to get to China as his health had critically deteriorated.
His transfer to South Africa sparked protests in the neighbouring country as Zimbabweans called for his deportation.
Mnangagwa was once airlifted to South Africa after he suspected to have been poisoned at a rally in Gwanda.
