Chamisa political career
Chamisa a former secretary-general of the Zimbabwe National Students Union, joined the Movement for Democratic Change, Zimbabwe’s main opposition party on its formation. He was recruited from college politics into mainstream national politics by MDC godfather the late Dr Morgen Richard Tsvangirai.
He is a former MDC Youth chairperson a position he was elected to after the death of outspoken Learnmore Judah Jongwe. At the June 2006 MDC party congress, Chamisa was elected MDC spokesperson a post he held till resuming the MDC organizing secretary role in April 2011 at Bulawayo party Congress.
He served as a chair of the portfolio committees of Defence and Home Affairs, Public Accounts, Gender and Youth and Transport and Communications in parliament.
Nelson Chamisa in Unity Government(GNU)
On 10 February 2009, Nelson Chamisa was appointed Minister of Information, Communication and Technology in the Government of National Unity (GNU). He served as a minister from February 2009 to July 2013 when the GNU ended. In 2014, he lost the position of party Secretary-General in the party’s 2014 Congress to Douglas Mwonzora.
President Morgan Tsvangirai appointed Advocate Nelson Chamisa together with Engineer Elias Mudzuri as Vice Presidents on July 16 2016.
On 7 February, President Tsvangirai anointed Advocate Chamisa the Acting President. After Tsvangirai’s death Chamisa resumed the MDC presidency which was contested and won by Thokozani Khupe. Towards the 31 July 2018 election, Chamisa and former MDC leaders Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube joined forces and formed the MDC Alliance party which was led by Nelson Chamisa.

Advocate Nelson Chamisa lost a much disputed election to Zanu PF lead by Emmerson Mnangagwa. The opposition disputed the election results. They criticized its lack of credibility and question the election board ZEC’s preparedness and integrity to administer elections. The MDC Alliance challenged the election results in the constitutional court and their challenge was dismissed with costs.
