Mzembi, Gandawa resign from People’s Party, Lloyd Msipa now leader: The People’s Party President Walter Mzembi and Deputy Godfrey Gandawa have resigned with immediate effect. The leaders have left secretary general Lloyd Msipa as the party leader. The project, which never took off, comprised of disgruntled members of the G40 faction of Zanu PF that were fired from the party by the Lacoste faction fronted by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The leadership change was announced through a letter signed both by Mzembi and Gandawa. The letter read:
LEADERSHIP CHANGE — PEOPLE’S PARTY
Having failed to resolve internal contradictions that have recently bedeviled the People’s Party, we have reached a decision together with my deputy, Dr Godfrey Gandawa, to step down from our positions in the interest of the party. The party was started with the sole objective of facilitating democratic change in Zimbabwe and that sacrosanct goal remains bigger than any individual, including those occupying the Presidency.
In that vein, we have decided to hand over control of the party to Secretary General Lloyd Msipa. We wish the party good success in its democratic endeavour.Dr Walter Mzembi and Dr Godfrey Gandawa
Mzembi is the former Minister of Tourism in the Robert Mugabe government and Gandawa is the former deputy Minister of Education. Mzembi remained in self imposed exile after the November 2017 coup that removed long standing ruler Robert Mugabe and replaced him with fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa. They have faced prosecution over crimes they allegedly committed during their time in office which they believe is politically motivated.
Earlier reports indicated another former Minister Saviour Kasukuwere who was Local Government Minister under Robert Mugabe was working to divide the People’s Party.
