Just over a month ago, it was announced that Gabriel Temudzani, the lead actor on Muvhango, would be leaving the show permanently after 23 years on the air. This news was met with a public outcry from fans who were sad to see the actor go. Some even suspected that the “exit” may have been a public relations stunt.
On a recent episode of the show, Chief Azwindini made a miraculous return after being killed by his arch-rival Tenda. Muvhango confirmed Gabriel’s return to the soap opera in a statement to news reporters.
“We are thrilled to confirm Chief Azwindini has returned to Muvhango after his departure in May. We received an overwhelming response from viewers who have expressed their excitement over his return, and we appreciate the unwavering support,” the statement read.
Gabriel took to his Instagram timeline to thank fans of the show for their support. “Indoda must have nine lives. Azwindini is back by popular demand on Muvhango. Thanks to the public outcry. The viewers have power,” he wrote.

In a previous interview with news reporters, Gabriel spoke about the importance of viewers to the success of Muvhango. “We can say what we want, but the viewers make the show. If the viewers are not there we might as well close shop and go to our respective homes. The viewers have been a pivotal part of the work we do and the world we find ourselves in. So big up to viewers and may they continue to watch and embrace the show and see value in what the show brings to the people, especially to South Africa,” he said.
Gabriel also emphasized the importance of protecting and valuing shows like Muvhango that bring hope and promote coexistence. “I think Muvhango is one of those shows we need to guard and protect because it brings us hope to say, in our different existence, we coexist and that’s something to write home about,” he said.
