Die Real Housewives van Pretoria is Afrikaans for The Real Housewives of Pretoria. It is a new reality show premiering on the 13th of October showing rich women from different walks of life showcasing their opulent lifestyles. It will be on kykNET and Showmax.
With the show’s title being Afrikaans and the show only showing Afrikaans housewives, many think the show’s plot is racially motivated and instead excludes other races. What makes the show worse is that only Afrikaans-speaking women are the show’s cast.
As we all know, Afrikaans is one of the least spoken languages in South Africa. A lot of people associate with the past injustices of South Africa before democracy. Unlike other real housewives’ reality shows, the show is focused on one race and culture, proving to be a trigger in Mzansi.
Will the reality show get viewers?
Most South Africans have accepted English as a neutral language and most television shows either have English speakers or English subtitles. Having a show in Afrikaans caters for the smallest demographic in Mzansi.
Many people expressed on Twitter that they will not bother themselves with watching the show. Firstly, the language is a concern, and secondly, the show excludes every other South African native by only having Afrikaans cast members.
Some parts of Pretoria are predominantly Afrikaans-dominated areas and the producers believe their idea is worth trying.
None of the cast members has been revealed to the public just as yet, but the show will gradually make introductions to the public.
