Mzansi Magic’s soapie DiepCity trends as it wins big at the SAFTAs. South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) are trending after they were held over the weekend. However, in the mix of things, it comes as a shocker that most watched drama series in Mzansi don’t win big.
Well, Mzansi Magic’s cancelled Telenovela DiepCity won big at the annual awards as it scooped five South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), followed by e.tv’s House of Zwide and Scandal! with four awards, Showmax’s hit telenovela The Wife won two awards. At the same time, 1Magic’s The River walked away with one award.
The main SAFTAs event was held on Saturday, 3 September, on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161) and S3 (Channel 193). The two-legged awards were divided into two sections. The first night of the event, titled Craft Awards, was hosted by former Generations: The Legacy actress Candice Modiselle and TV personality Smash Afrika on Friday, 2 September, on YouTube.
Media personalities Khutso Theledi and Expresso host Ryle De Monrny joined Mpho Popps on stage as hosts for the main event. Mzansi’s A-listers walked down the red carpet looking fabulous, and popular TV personalities Palesa Tembe and Lasizwe Dambuza hosted the red carpet event.

Not so long ago, it was confirmed that DiepCity was being cancelled and Mzansi was more than saddened with the news. However, Mzasi Magic has since confirmed that it parted with the drama series after their contract ended. The series was set to run for two years, and its time has ended. Well, in the recently held awards, it won big.
The drama series won the most popular TV soap or Telenovela, beating the likes of Scandal, Gomora, Generations and The River. Of interest is the fact that it won the best Telenovela beating the likes of The Wife and The River. It wasnt a shocker to see the drama series scooping the best achievement in directing award.
The storyline and plot earned the drama series the best achievement in art direction in TV soap and Telenovela. In the mix of things, the drama series closed the night with the best achievement in make-up and hairstyling Tv soap and telenovela ward. No doubt we can all agree to the fact that the drama series is bowing out of our small screens with big wins.
