Musician Mudiwa Hood has located the thieving teacher. He teaches at a private school in the outskirts of Harare. He doesn’t reside in Mutoko as reported earlier. The teacher was caught stealing maize cobs from a field near the school. He was wearing a shirt and tie when he was caught.
The teacher has been showered with sympathy instead of being humiliated as the public understands the financial pressures that teachers are facing.
“The teacher has 3 kids,” Mudiwa said, “and i have paid school fees for all of them. I have compensated the farmer for his stolen cobs, and the teacher is now a free man. I will take him out for lunch on Saturday and i will give hm a few things,” he added.
Mudiwa called upon well wishers to assist the teacher with anything of value and to send money to an Ecocash number. Mudiwa’s efforts paid off as people started commenting on his post with screenshots of payments made to the teacher.
“Mudiwa has his issues but i salute him for doing this. This is what we expect from our celebrities,” one follower commented.
Zimbabwe teachers are battling to make ends meet as their biggest employer, the government is dragging its legs over salary adjustments to meet rising prices of basic commodities. Teachers earn less that 100 USD equivalent. Multiple attempts by the unions they represent have been met with an armed heavy hand by the government. Protests have been broken and go slows are met victimisation. They are not able to strike as the state is using agents to victimise teachers.
