Mthandazo Gatya’s popularity grows during the Lockdown
Mzansi ended the year 2020 in a spirit of unity derived from the hit song ‘Senzeni’ by Mthandazo Gatya. In an interview with SABC, Mthandazo revealed that people got to finally listen to his music, because they were settled at home during the Lockdown. He believes if things were normal in Mzansi, people would be going out and partying, leaving no room to listen to soft jams.
After releasing his EP titled ‘Umonde in January this year, Mthandazo has already stolen attention by another hit song, ‘Abafana’. All his songs have a clear message and in Abafana, he expresses how young men are snatching people’s wives and breaking up marriages. Mthandazo always features Commando and Dj Manzo in his music because the trio shares a music chemistry.
Senzeni gave Mthandazo the breakthrough he had been yearning for, after being in the music industry for ten years. Previously, he had released tracks such as Ulixoli and Dolly but the tracks failed to gain traction. After he released Senzeni, the song became a hit when DJ Manzo used a snippet of the track in a comment on a Twitter post by Cassper Nyovest. Senzeni went viral and before long Lulo Café was playing it on his Metro FM house and hip-hop show, Audiogasm. When he was asked to explain the message behind the song, he had this to say;
“The song tries by all means to destroy the spirit of hatred among people. It urges that instead of hating a person on the basis of their mistakes, perhaps if you showed them love they will maybe change for the better. The lyrics speak to the spirit of lifting each other up,”
Mthandazo Gatya was born and raised in Kekana park, South of Johannesburg. Music has always been part of his life as he joined the primary and secondary choir’s at school. His initial musical efforts culminated in a short radio stint and he stopped making music for a while. In 2020, he won a second prize on Jam Alley with a song he composed, which motivated him to make more music. Mthandazo found his sound by fusing maskhandi, soul, dance and afro-pop.
With the continued fluctuation in Covid-19 cases, Mthandazo is most likely to further gain popularity. He is currently signed to Jodi Entertainment , with exclusive rights from Universal Music. Although this Covid -19 era has made lives difficult for most people, Mthandazo seems to be amongst the ones benefiting from the limited population movement.
