The Real Housewives of Durban black-tie event may as well be the most awkward dinner of the season so far. South Africans have had mixed reactions to LaConco speaking Isizulu in front of English-speaking guests in the mix of things. After the episode’s airing, viewers noted many things that went wrong at the dinner.
Mzansi found many things wrong with the surprise black-tie event that the homemakers invited. At first, the host was late to her event, and some guests wanted to leave. The Housewives were unsure who their surprise guest was, and they jokingly said that she was late they thought it was Oprah Winfrey. However, Thobile Khumalo was their surprise guest, and she came on the arm of her husband, Musa.
As the dinner proceeded, it became awkward as Laconco spoke in her first language, Isizulu. They were questioning Musa about his decision to have a polygamous marriage. The tension in the room could be cut with a knife as it was clear that their white guests felt left out. When some of the wives tried to accommodate their guests by speaking in English, things got more awkward because Nonku believed all men cheated at some point in their lives.
Mzansi had mixed reactions to the whole language issue that formed a debate on Twitter. Some tweeps believe that it was rude of the Zulu speaking people to not communicate in a language that everyone understood. One Twitter user said that:
It’s etiquette and courtesy. There were non-Zulu speaking people at the table, it’s being courteous more than anything.
Tweets react to LaConco speaking IsiZulu at a dinner on RHOD
One Tweep named Sne Mzilikazi had a lot to say about the issue. She said that black people should not be attacking a Zulu woman for speaking Zulu in KwaZulu Natal. She says that many of these people are trying to please white people who make no effort to learn our languages. Her tweet came with many people in agreement with her way of thinking. However, some masses have a different mindset as they believe that only colonized minds would see something wrong with LaConco speaking Zulu.
The fourth episode of The Real Housewives of Durban has trended on social media for many reasons. A few days ago, people were attacking Musa for taking the shine from the homemakers when he had his show. Annie and LaConco were accused of behaving like mean girls and bullies. Last but not least, the new addition, Londie London, is being accused of kissing up to people.
