Minister Motshekga: Leaked Maths and Physical Science Matric final exams to be rewritten
The Basic Education Department says over 190 pupils had access to the Maths paper 2 exam but it was not sure about the extent of the leak.
Minister Angie Motshekga has announced for the first time that there will be a rewrite of the Maths paper 2 exam and Physical Science Exam.
Maths Paper 2 will be rewritten on the 15th of December and Physical Science will be rewritten on the 17th of this month.
“We can confirm that indeed the Maths 2 paper and the Physical Science paper were leaked. So we established a task team that would give us a report by the 30th of November to give us a sense of the extend of the leak. We met on the 1st of December to get a report from the team that looked at the extend of the leak. So we did convince a meeting to consider the recommendations by the National Examinations Regulations Committee. The report of the NIC was presented to the Council of Education,” the Minister said.
A decision had to be taken. Having considered the report and the recommendations we arrived at the decision that there has to be a national rewrite of your Maths Paper 2 and Physical Science Paper 2. It is the first time in history that we have a national rewrite. It’s a very difficult decision and a sad decision to make. We have had provincial rewrite but this is the first time ever that we have to do a national rewrite. There are parts of the sector that is not in agreement,” she continued.
The Congress of South African Students (COSAS) opposed the move and called on matrics not to rewrite the examination.
