Movement For Democratic Change Alliance (MDC Alliance) member of parliament for Mutasa South in Regai Tsunga was yesterday arrested for distributing mealie meal to the poor people in his constituency.
Tsunga was using his Nissan NP300 truck to move around Mutasa South constituency distributing mealie meal when ZRP officers stopped him and arrested him. He was taken to Mutare central police station together with his team and charged with ‘unnecessary movement’ before being fined $500.
The incident sparked an outrage from Zimbabweans who accused Zanu PF for employing ‘dirty’ politics at the expense of the people.
The MDC also expressed their shock at the actions of the police who are taking orders from Zanu PF party:
It is a matter of regret that our Member of Parliament for Mutasa South, Regai Tsunga has been fined for sourcing and donating mealie meal. This is not the time to politicise assistance to the needy and vulnerable. Instead, we should be joining hands to save lives.
The arrest is not an isolated incident as the Zanu PF government has done it before. The government has been accused for double standards as MPs such as Winston Chitando, member of parliament for Gutu central and Ziyambi Ziyambi have been donating covid-19 relief supplies to their constituencies without hindrance. Zanu PF linked Norton MP Themba Mliswa has also been moving around his constituency donating mealie meal and other groceries. Mliswa has also been monitoring the implementation of social distancing in the small town.
