The MDC Alliance has responded to the recalling of its MPs by Thokozani Khupe from Parliament. Members of parliament Thabitha Khumalo, Chalton Hwende and Prosper Mutseyami and Lilian Tevios have been recalled from parliament by Jacob Mudenda as a result of the supreme court ruling.
Below is MDC Alliance Vice President Tendai Biti’s response on behalf of the MDC Alliance
“The speaker of parliament Jacob Mudenda purporting to act on a letter of recall written by MDC-T recalled the participation in parliament for four of our members of parliament.
As MDC Alliance movement we stand in solidarity with Nelson Chamisa, and members of parliament Thabitha Khumalo, Chalton Hwende and Prosper Mutseyami and Lilian Tevios
We are aware that the basis of these shenanigeans emanate from the events of 31 July 2018 when he lost to Nelson Chamisa. This is a predatory response by Emmerson Mnangagwa because he lost the elections.
We continue to say Mnangagwa you are illegitimate and we will never bestow the elgitimacy you lack
We are greatly concerned by the capture and abuse of state institutions to pursue personal vindictiveness. It emanates from the court ruling by the supreme court judgement that was made in the middle lockdown. The parliament today sat for 15 minutes to recall our members of parliament.
We want to tell Mnangagwa that throughout history, authoritarian regimes have constantly strove to destroy people’s projects but that doesn’t work. It failed to work when Smith tried to destroy the people’s project but he failed.”
The MDC Alliance MPs recall is likely to spark another wave of protests and violence. Biti said,
“We consider what has happened today as a declaration of war, as the end of normal politics. We as a people we will defend ourselves. We have given peace a chance and we have given dialogue a chance. Emmerson Mnangagwa has shown that he is not interested in dialogue. There is no struggle without scars, there is no struggle without bruises. we dust ourselves and face the beast in the eye.”
History is fully of people who have been judged harshly by the people like Moïse Tshombe. Mr Mnangagwa has closed the doors of dialogue, so we are changing gears and he must accept the consequences of shutting that door. Everyone in Zimbabwe knows we are MDC Alliance. No judgement can change that and you cannot force MPs to suddenly be members of the MDC-T. We will defend in the water, in the air, on the ground.”
