MDC Alliance MPs disengage from Zimbabwe parliament: Zimbabwe’s largest opposition party MDC Alliance has called on its members of parliament to disengage in any parliamentary activities and anything associated with the ruling government Zanu PF. The MPs will withdraw from all parliamentary activities
The resolution was made by the party executive and has been announced by Vice Chairperson Job Wiwa Sikhala through a press conference at the party headquarters at Harvest House.
The firebrand leader reiterated that Chamisa will not participate in the ‘Zanu PF sponsored’ MDC-T extraordinary congress that was directed by the Supreme court. The visibly angry, desk banging and shouting Sikhala vowed to mobilise people to ‘protect their democracy.’
Disengagement from parliament is not resigning
The MDC Alliance position at the moment is the MPs should not participate in parliamentary activities but they remain members of parliament.
MDC Alliance consultative process
The MDC Alliance will engage in a consultative process from the National Executive and the grassroots supporters to determine their next move.
Depending on the outcome of their deliberations, they might resolve to resign from parliament or challenge the recall of MPs.
Background of the story
On the 30th of March 2020, the Supreme court of Zimbabwe ruled the MDC-T party was to hold an extraordinary congress using 2014 structures and named Thokozani Khupe as the Acting President of the party. The move triggered a series of controversial events that are viewed to be sponsored by the Zanu PF government by political analysts.
Thokozani Khupe of the MDC-T party in parliament went on to recall four members of parliament representing MDC Alliance. The controversial decision was allowed to happen by the Zanu PF speaker of parliament. It sparked outrage across the country with legal experts questioning how a leader of another opposition party can be allowed to represent two parties at the same time and cherry pick which member of parliament to recall and which one to keep.
