The Nelson Chamisa led MDC Alliance has been declared a legit political party after the High Court of Zimbabwe granted an interim judgement saying MDC Alliance was a political party. The ruling came after Chamisa filed an urgent chamber application seeking the court to stop the distribution of $7.5 million under the Political Parties Finance Act to the Thokozani Khupe led MDC-T.

This has, however added for flame to the ongoing battle between Chamisa and Khupe over the control of the opposition party’s assets. High Court judge Justice Munangati Munongwa, last week granted the provisional order requested by Chamisa to stop the disbursement of $7.5 million under the Political Parties Finance Act to the Thokozani Khupe led MDC-T.

In the matter, the Finance Ministry was cited as the first respondent, the Justice Ministry as the second respondent and the Parliament of Zimbabwe as the third respondent. On March 31, Zimbabwe’s Supreme Court declared Chamisa leadership of the main opposition party illegitimate and ordered Khupe who leads the smaller rival MDC formation to hold an election to replace him within three months.

Khupe then moved to take control of the party recalling four MDC Alliance leaders from Parliament. But Chamisa sought an interdict barring Government from releasing the finds under the Political Parties Finance Act to her faction.
The judgement acknowledged the MDC Alliance as a legit political party.
Early this month, the Parliament recalled the top four MDC Alliance legislators after the MDC-T ordered them to be recalled enforcing the Supreme Court judgment.

By recalling the four Members of Parliament who are obviously the key leaders in MDC Alliance and active participants in the Parliament, a substantial part of the ground was rooted from the feet of the MDC Alliance. Khupe has sent the message that more ground will be cleared, the intention being to cripple the MDC Alliance and to make their MPs believe that their party holds no value.
Khupe is reportedly having the State machinery on her side and she is suddenly the kingmaker.
With the power to recall in her hands, Khupe can rampage through Parliament, recalling MDC parliamentarians who are unwilling to join her side of the divide.
