Mberengwa miner killed in boulder accident
A prominent artisanal miner Godfrey Maposa died after a huge boulder hit him while coming out of a shaft. The miner’s demise left the Mberengwa residents in awe. The boulder that hit him was removed by a bulldozer as colleagues tried to remove the big boulder to no avail.
The District Development Coordinator Nyede Ndeya urges miners to be very careful or if possible stop mining activities under the current heavy rains. The rains make the ground unstable and highly susceptible to collapsing.
The incident took place at Jumbo North Mine near Dove Bridge in Mberengwa. A witness Givemore Msipa present at site reports to the Mirror:
“They were working in a group of 6 when hey started coming out of the shaft around lunch time. The others came out but large boulders started falling into the shat when it was his (Godfrey Maposa) turn. A boulder squashed him and it was too big his colleagues could not move it. A bulldozer was called in to remove the boulder,” he said.
The miner died on the spot and was taken to Zvishavane.
Popularly known for his footballing skills, Godfrey Maposa was the captain of the Vanguard football team. The Vanguard football coach, players and staff are still in shock.
