Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has thrown his weight behind defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, insisting they remain favourites to retain the Betway Premiership title—even with Orlando Pirates mounting serious pressure.
Speaking after Arrows’ 2-1 defeat to Sundowns at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night, where The Brazilians played the final stages with 10 men following Jayden Adams’ dismissal, Mngqithi highlighted the depth of his former club as the decisive factor.
“I’ve always believed Sundowns have what it takes to win the league, and I’m not mincing my words,” said Mngqithi. “Even if you look at the players who weren’t on the bench, that team has got what it takes. Pirates are bringing good competition, but Sundowns’ depth is unmatched.”
Arrows Outclassed, But Progress Noted
Mngqithi admitted his Arrows side stood little chance against Sundowns this time, despite having beaten them earlier in Durban. Still, he sees clear improvement in his squad this season and believes they are heading in the right direction.
VAR Debate Intensifies
Beyond the title race, Mngqithi weighed in on the ongoing debate around Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. With Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie confirming plans to introduce VAR next season, the Arrows coach argued that the system should be implemented immediately.
“Next season is too far. The game is becoming too dynamic for referees,” he explained. “We’re running one of the biggest leagues on the continent, with huge investments in clubs and training. Mistakes are happening too often, and VAR would ensure results reflect the true performance on the pitch.”
