Malaria in Zimbabwe has become another health threat. Zimbabwe has experienced 170,000 cases of malaria and 150 deaths so far in 2020 according to data from the Ministry of Health.
Malaria cases increase from 2019
“This year the cumulative malaria cases in the country stands at 170,303 and the deaths are 152 compared to 117,715 and 127 in 2019 over the same period, signifying increases of 44.7% and 20.4% in cases and deaths respectively between the two years,” says a statement from the Ministry.
The cases have significantly increased as compared to the previous year mainly due to lack of finance to fund malaria prevention methods. Zimbabwe has been experiencing hyper inflation and a depreciation in the currency.
Zimbabwe relies on donor funds to fight malaria
Zimbabwe largely relies on donor funds in the fight against Malaria. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest single malaria prevention donors in Zimbabwe and Africa. The Global Fund is also another organisation that financially supports the fight against the spread of malaria. The Geneva headquartered fund’s objective is to accelerate the end of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as epidemics.
Zimbabwe’s cases are likely to surpass that of Malawi.
According to the World Health Organisation, malaria remains one of the world’s leading killers, claiming the life of one child every two minutes. Most of these deaths are in Africa, where more than 250 000 children die from the disease every year. Children under 5 are at greatest risk of its life-threatening complications. Worldwide, malaria kills 435 000 people a year, most of them children.
