Major General Douglas Nyikayaramba dies from Covid-19
The Major General Douglas Nyikayaramba has died from Covid-19. President Mnangagwa confirms the tragedy during the Cabinet meeting this morning. The former Chief of Staff Administration in the Zimbabwe National Army was now serving as the Ambassador from Zimbabwe to Mozambique.
General Nyikayaramba is part of the coup generals to die from the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2017 he was the face and co-executors team that led the famous coup. He was 64 years old. The retired General also served as a member of the Constitution Parliamentary Committee (COPAC) team. The COPAC team was a Constitution Select Committee of the Parliament mandated with the drawing up a new constitution for Zimbabwe by the Government of National Unity from 2009 to 2013.
General Nyikayaramba was a loyalist to the former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. While commanding the Three Brigade in Mutare he called for a life presidency for the late Mugabe. In 2002, Nyikayaramba was the Chief Executive Officer of the Elections Supervisory Commission. During his tenure as the CEO sources claim that he ensured that the former President Mugabe won the 2002 elections.

He also served as the Chairman of the National Railways of Zimbabwe. General Nyikayaramba was also part of the Autonomous Sanctions (Designated Persons and Entities and Declared Persons – Zimbabwe) List of 2012. This was declared by the Australian Government. Other people part of the list include The President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Didymus Mutasa, Augustine Chihuri among other top ZANU PF officials.
In 2017 the retired General Nyikayaramba took a dig at the G40 faction which included former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, Jonathan Moyo and Saviour Kasukuwere. Once in Parliament he condemned corruption and mentioned a few big wigs which was clear to the public that there was factionalism in the government.
Back in 2012 addressing the audience in Masvingo Nyikayaramba boasted that the former President Mugabe would rule for a very long time then give the reigns to now President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Once labelled as the killer General, Nyikayaramba’s time in power was characterized by intimidating opposition in the country.
