As the Springboks continue to evolve, ushering in a new generation of rugby talent, the competition for national team spots has reached fever pitch. For seasoned campaigners like Lukhanyo Am, the path back to the green and gold jersey is more challenging than ever—but the 31-year-old centre is ready to rise again.
After a tough spell battling injuries and inconsistent form, Am has returned to the Sharks with renewed purpose and a fire in his belly. His comeback couldn’t be timelier, as the United Rugby Championship clash against Leinster looms large this Saturday.
“Injuries are part of the game we love,” Am reflected. “Being out was tough, but I used the time to work on myself and come back stronger.”
The Fight for the Bok Jersey
The Springbok setup is brimming with talent. Rising stars like Jesse Kriel and Canan Moodie have surged ahead in the race for the outside centre role, leaving Am to watch from the sidelines as South Africa clinched yet another Rugby Championship title.
But rather than sulk, Am has turned that frustration into fuel.
“It’s been amazing to see the boys performing so well,” he said. “I know what it takes to be there and to stay there, and I’m focused on doing the work that will get me back.”
A Champion’s Mindset
With two World Cup medals to his name, Am knows the grind, the grit, and the glory of elite rugby. Springbok coaches have made it clear: once he’s firing on all cylinders, they want him back in the mix. That promise, combined with his own hunger, makes his return one of the most anticipated storylines of the season.
“Getting back into the Springbok mix will take game time and form,” Am admitted. “It’s very competitive there, but I know what it takes. I just need to keep improving and hopefully I’ll get that call again.”
As the Sharks gear up for battle and the Springboks sharpen their arsenal, Lukhanyo Am stands at the crossroads of redemption and resurgence. The jersey may be harder to earn—but for a player of his calibre, the journey is far from over.
