Lighting strikes four men drinking alcohol under a tree and kills three
Four friends drinking under a Musau tree in Makonde were struck by lightning. Three of them died from the burns.
Mashonaland West Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Magret Chitove confirms the incident to HMetro. She reports to Hmetro that the incident happened at Mhembwechena Shopping Centre in Makonde.
“The four villagers Stewart Phiri, Shadreck Bvudzijena and brothers Tongai and Shine Gandiwa were struck by lightning in the afternoon. Stewart, Shadreck and Tongai were pronounced dead upon arrival at a local clinic.”
“The four were seated under a Musau tree when the horrific incident occurred. A good Samaritan ferried them to the nearest clinic,” she said.
Shine Gandiwa the lone survivor of the incident escaped death by a whisker as he was only injured on his left leg and right arm. Inspector Chitove urges the public not to sit under trees while it is raining or when there are signs of lighting.

Shine Gandiwa also report to HMetro what happened at the shopping centre.
“When we arrived at the shopping centre with my late brother Tongai we bought a super beer and went to sit under a tree. After a while Stewart and Shadreck came to join us under the tree. It was a bit cloudy but it was not raining at all.”
“The moment I put the super container down, I don’t remember what followed. I only remember seeing my fellow companions lying down on the ground,” he said.
Lightning is a natural phenomenon but some believe it can be manipulated by those with traditional super powers. Sources say the villagers feel like the lightning was sent by someone. It is important that we desist from sitting or standing under trees when it is raining or when there are signs of rain.
