President Ramaphosa addressing the nation revealed that a continued total lock down is not sustainable hence Level 4 Lockdown will be implemented.
Level 4 Lockdown – Cigarettes will be sold when the lockdown is partially lifted from the 1st of May.
The country’s borders will remain closed except for the repatriation of citizens.
The nation is currently of risk level 5 of total lockdown thus need to open essential industries and implement Lockdown Level 4.

How the alert system works
The level of alert at any given time will be decided based on the rate of transmission, as well as the capacity of the health system to provide care to those infected.

Essential goods and services will continue to be available at all levels.
Different parts of the country may be at different levels simultaneously.
Some precautions will remain in place at all levels, including social distancing guidelines and safe hygiene practices.

Level 4 Lockdown allowed activities
Public transport will operate with a limited number of passengers but they will all have to wear face masks, said Ramaphosa.
While the sale of cigarettes will be permitted, so will outdoor exercise under strict conditions.
Level 4 Lockdown Restrictions
The following restrictions will remain in place after the national lockdown, and regardless of the level of alert at any given time:
- Sit-in restaurants and hotels
- Bars and shebeens
- Conference and convention centres
- Entertainment venues, including cinemas, theatres, and concerts
- Sporting events
- Religious, cultural and social gatherings
- The country’s borders will remain closed except for the repatriation of citizens. The ban on travel between provinces will largely remain, except for the transportation of goods and in some cases for funerals.
No gatherings of more than 10 people outside of a workplace will be permitted.
